About Ethiopian Opals
The opal in this ring hails from the Welo Province of Ethiopia, a region that only began producing gem-grade opals in the early 2000s—but what a discovery it was. Ethiopian opals, especially the white and crystal varieties, are known for their vivid play-of-color, hydrophane nature (meaning they can absorb water), and incredible brightness.
Unlike Australian opals, Ethiopian stones often show more dramatic fire across a wider color range, making them both rare and increasingly sought after. When dry, they’re lightweight and dazzling—each one a tiny nebula of color, impossible to replicate.
